What does ‘abrosexual’ mean?

TikTok users are educating others on “LGBT terms you may not have heard of before,” with more and more people identifying as being abrosexual.

You must have heard of bisexual, asexual, heterosexual, and homosexual. To many, it is an abomination to talk about LGBTQ+, not to mention supporting or having anything to do with any aspect of it. But how rational is it to condemn what you know very little or nothing about? How do you even know you are not inherently part of what you condemn?

What is abrosexuality?

Abrosexuality is fluctuations in sexual attraction. An abrosexual person is someone whose sexual attraction often changes. According to Healthline, “They might identify with the term ‘gay,’ and later feel attracted to people of all genders, and then feel little to no sexual attraction at all.

“Typically, abrosexual people experience fluctuations in terms of who they’re attracted to as well as how intense their attraction is.”

Different strokes for different folks

LGBTQ+ communities are accommodated around the West not because of the morality or immorality of the practice but because of the human rights and inclusivity dimensions. They believe adults should be able to make rational choices on moral issues just as they do in choices around robbery, the looting of public funds, scamming the system or individuals, money ritual, pornography, etc. Some people would never practise gay sex even if the penalty for not doing so was the death sentence.

LGBTQ+ in Africa

LGBTQIA+ is an abbreviation for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer or questioning, intersex, asexual, and more. These terms are used to describe a person’s sexual orientation or gender identity. Some countries in Africa accommodate LGBTQ+ communities because of the human rights implications. South Africa is generally considered to be the most gay-friendly African country in respect of the legal status of LGBT rights, although other nations such as Namibia, Cape Verde, Mauritius, Seychelles, Angola, Botswana, Mozambique, São Tomé and Príncipe and Rwanda are also frequently regarded as being very socially tolerant and accepting of LGBT rights. 

This is far from the case in Nigeria, where gay sex is illegal under the Criminal Code and carries a maximum penalty of 14 years’ imprisonment. It is even worse in Uganda where the death penalty was slammed on a 20-year-old man last year for “aggravated homosexuality”.

What is aggravated homosexuality?

The Ugandan anti-LGBT legislation signed into law in May 2023 prescribes life imprisonment for sex between two people of the same biological sex and the death penalty for “aggravated homosexuality”, which includes:

• Same-sex rape
• Sex in a position of authority or procured by intimidation
• Sex with persons older than seventy-five
• Sex with the disabled and mentally ill
• Homosexual acts committed by a person with a previous conviction of homosexuality (serial offender).
